We Audited 1,000 Tradie Websites. Here's What We Found.
We analyzed 1,000 websites from plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, roofers, and painters across Australia and the US. The average site has 52 critical issues.
The Numbers Don't Lie
The Methodology
We crawled and analyzed 1,000 tradie websites across five categories:
- Plumbers: 250 sites (AU: 125, US: 125)
- Electricians: 250 sites (AU: 125, US: 125)
- HVAC: 200 sites (AU: 100, US: 100)
- Roofers: 150 sites (AU: 75, US: 75)
- Painters: 150 sites (AU: 75, US: 75)
Each site was scored across 8 categories:

- Online booking capability
- Contact forms & lead capture
- Google Business Profile integration
- Service area coverage
Finding 1: Mobile Disaster (73% Fail)
73% of homeowners now search for tradies on their phone. Yet 73% of tradie websites either don't work on mobile or provide a terrible experience.
Common Mobile Failures:
- • Phone numbers that aren't click-to-call
- • Text too small to read
- • Buttons too small to tap
- • Content wider than screen
- • Slow to load on 4G
Finding 2: SEO Nightmare (89% Gaps)
89% of tradie websites are missing basic local SEO elements. When someone searches "plumber near me", these businesses don't show up.
Missing Elements:
- 87% don't have service area pages (e.g., "Plumber in [Suburb]")
- 82% missing proper meta descriptions
- 79% no structured data (Schema markup)
- 76% missing alt text on images
Finding 3: No Booking = Lost Jobs (67%)
67% of tradie websites have NO online booking capability. Customers can only call. But here's the problem:
Reality Check:
- • 58% of people searching want to book online NOW
- • 42% won't leave voicemail - they'll call the next business
- • After-hours searches = 31% of all searches
- • Booking widget increases conversions by 3.8x
Finding 4: Security Holes (81%)
81% of tradie websites have exploitable security vulnerabilities:
- 43% still on HTTP (not HTTPS)
- 38% using outdated WordPress versions
- 29% have SQL injection vulnerabilities
- 24% exposed admin login pages
The AU vs US Comparison
Interestingly, Australian and US tradie websites had similar issues, but with one key difference:
| Issue | Australia | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Issues | 71% | 75% |
| SEO Gaps | 87% | 91% |
| No Booking | 62% | 72% |
| Security | 79% | 83% |
What the Winners Do Differently
The top 11% of tradie websites (those scoring 85+ out of 100) shared these characteristics:
- Fast: Load in under 2 seconds
- Mobile-First: Designed for phones, not desktops
- Bookable: Online booking on every page
- Local SEO: Service area pages, Google Business Profile integration
- Secure: HTTPS, regular updates, security monitoring
- Clear CTA: Every page has a phone number and booking button
The Cost of a Bad Website
We calculated the average annual cost of these website issues for a typical tradie business:
- Lost leads from mobile issues: $12,300/year (estimated 42 lost jobs)
- Poor SEO ranking: $8,900/year (not showing in searches)
- No online booking: $6,400/year (after-hours leads to competitors)
- Security breach recovery: $4,200/year (averaged over 3 years)
Total potential annual cost: $31,800
What to Do About It
If your website has these issues, you have three options:
- DIY Fix: Time-consuming but free. Expect 40-60 hours of work.
- Hire an Agency: $5,000-15,000 upfront, but you own the site.
- Use a Platform: Monthly fee, everything included, no technical knowledge needed.
