The Methodology

We crawled and analyzed 1,000 tradie websites across five categories:

  • Plumbers: 250 sites (AU: 125, US: 125)
  • Electricians: 250 sites (AU: 125, US: 125)
  • HVAC: 200 sites (AU: 100, US: 100)
  • Roofers: 150 sites (AU: 75, US: 75)
  • Painters: 150 sites (AU: 75, US: 75)

Each site was scored across 8 categories:

  1. Mobile responsiveness
  2. Page load speed
  3. Local SEO optimization
  4. Security (HTTPS, vulnerabilities)
  5. Online booking capability
  6. Contact forms & lead capture
  7. Google Business Profile integration
  8. Service area coverage

Finding 1: Mobile Disaster (73% Fail)

73% of homeowners now search for tradies on their phone. Yet 73% of tradie websites either don't work on mobile or provide a terrible experience.

Common Mobile Failures:

  • • Phone numbers that aren't click-to-call
  • • Text too small to read
  • • Buttons too small to tap
  • • Content wider than screen
  • • Slow to load on 4G

Finding 2: SEO Nightmare (89% Gaps)

89% of tradie websites are missing basic local SEO elements. When someone searches "plumber near me", these businesses don't show up.

Missing Elements:

  • 87% don't have service area pages (e.g., "Plumber in [Suburb]")
  • 82% missing proper meta descriptions

  4. Local SEO: Service area pages, Google Business Profile integration
  5. Secure: HTTPS, regular updates, security monitoring
  6. Clear CTA: Every page has a phone number and booking button
